Volcanicast for the Week Ending 2010/04/02
Volcanicast April 5th, 2010
In this, the last Volcanicast EVAR we don’t even really need show notes. We pretty much ramble, reminisce, and ruminate on whatever we feel like. Oh, and we talk about a dozen or so topics. But not at length; don’t worry.

* Holy Crap that was long.
* Holy Crap do these show notes suck.
* Luckily, teh Volcanipedia is teh done!
* http://www.crazynutso.com/volcanipedia/tiki-index.php?page=Week+Ending+April+2+2010
* Links to severals of YouTube videos that no one will bother to follow.
* Marvel at how few genuinely geeky pop culture refs these guys don’t get!
* MSTK!! They didn’t get an MSTK ref, for pete’s sake! Also, you try doing a 3-part harmony by yourself.
* What kind of geeks are you?
** The kind that doesn’t watch Futurama, either, despite it being written for geeks, complete with math jokes.
* But that’s beside the point.
* Anyhow, it’s all done now, hopefully, the follow up won’t suck.
* But that ‘Greatest hits’ show might be a while, like not until the end of the month, assuming I have time between now and then.
* Not because there are a lot of greatest moments, but because I’d have to find them and edit them.
* And who has time for that?
* I don’t follow Kevin Smith in Twitter, either, although I visit his Twitter page from time to time.
** But his podcast is just a couple of friends having weird conversations, without any lame gimmick.
** Like reporting on Volcanic topics, for example.
** Sometimes he talks about his movies and what their doing now, sometimes they talk about bizzare what if scenerios
** Like what if you could go back in time to Little House and give them wet wipes.
** Or what if Helen Keller was a scam.
** Plus he’s trying to put together more podcasts, so there will be one for each day of the week.
** Seriously, it’s a fun family of podcasts.
** TekDiff (or however it’s misspelled) is also awesome, and it’ll be even more awesome if he uses my lame audience participation ideas.
* I also txted the show, but Wes wisely decided not to read that.
* Sam WAS enjoyed!
* I’ve run out of crap to put into the bullet points.
* Plus the Tylenol PM is kicking in!
* (You have to switch it up once in a while, or you get hooked on teh legal drugs.)
* The next show won’t be so long.
* * We won’t read really long emails, for starters.
* * And any comment with more than 25 bullet points can’t complain about anything else being too long.
* I’ll get to Volcanipedia in a moment.
* There is a very large hole in my geek knowledge all throughout the late 90s and early 00s. I watched very little TV and even fewer movies. MST3K fit nicely in that time.
* * However, I am not sure if that’s what you’re talking about as you reference MSTK.
* * And to answer your next question, I’m a “Correct acronym” geek.
* I am fairly sure I saw every episode of Futurama before it got canceled. The first time.
* Kevin Smith’s gimmick is that he’s famous outside of podcasting.
* * That guarantees him more listeners than anybody who only does a podcast and hasn’t been making movies for over a decade.
* If I feel the need to increase my podcasts (I’m overfull right now but shows do end on occasion - as I’ve proved) I’ll check him out.
* I didn’t send in any ideas to TekDiff (You got it right) because I’m lame and boring.
* I thought that was just for me.
* * (cry cry cry)
* Sam was also Joyce. Who knew?
* My legal drug - Seagrams 151 - has gone to my head. I can has a slight hangover.
Volcnipedia:
* (title) If the show had a budget, I’d have played that song at the end.
* (first appearances) I don’t know who that was. Some chick wandered into the studio and we asked her to do the week ending date.
* You let your kids play a game where they do dementia swapping? That does not seem wise at all.
* I didn’t think the show notes needed transcripts. You could make your own by typing what I (or you) said.
* I read the first paragraph of the Wikipedia entry on The Room. It sounds like the kind of crap my girlfriend in college (hi if you’re reading this!) would rent.
* Pinky And The Other Pinky
* I have never seen a “Best Of” tonight show. Surely they stopped making those around 1991?
* I’ve already covered my personal reason for not knowing anything MST3K
* I see what you did there. Rag. On the iPad.
* (music) That will always be the theme for the show, for it is awesome.
* I only know about ‘The Room’ because it was talked about on SModcast, as being one of those ’so bad it’s good’ movies.
* I dunno when they stopped making them, but the clip is very old, and has a young Johnny Carson throwing the tomahawk. It has been shown many times and parodied as well.
* The Rag on the iPad was a total accident. Period.
* Anyone else but me going to have an empty feeling in that thing I call a heart without my weekly Volcanicast?
* MST3K kicks ass
* The Blendtech guy blended an iPad. Best 500$ I’ve ever seen spent.
I already have it, to be honest. 3:30 last night I almost checked out the Google Trends just for fun. When you perform an action every weekday for nearly 3 years it becomes a bit of a habit.
* Wow, low on the comments since Hooters deserted us. (HEARTBREAKER!!)
* I checked out the 151 rum at the ‘Wine & Spirit’ shop, but was scared off by all the ‘highly flammable’ warnings. Why doesn’t it just say ‘ideal Molotov cocktail’ and be done with it?
* I’m also heartened to know how much Sam loved the song I did for her. It’s always nice to see 15 seconds of hard work pay off so handsomely.
* I turned away from the phone to take a breath.
* Thanks for all the fish?
* Strange. I thought 151 was inflammable, not flammable.
* But when you think about it, 3 out of every 4 molecules is alcohol so you gotta think it’s gonna burn.
* Actually, it’s in-F-able. Just like Pounce Huia.
* C’mon people! It’s the last show, can’t anyone lay on some of the love?
* I could try to come up with something even creepier to sing at Sam, but it’d be tough to outdo my last voicemail.
* As for the ‘greatest hits’ show, still no progress, although I did re-listen to some of the first two shows.
** and I can conclusively say that nothing from them will be included.
* Although the first show DID prove Sam was wrong (AGAIN!) when she said she was the first peanut gallery. . .
** It was the former Mrs Wesley.
** Maybe she was the first Jam?
I never said I was the first peanut Gallery….I think Wes did. He is the guy with the lower voice than mine, but not as low as bob’s. Just in case you were wondering. And Sean….you never called!
-Sam.
I did say that. However, in my defense, she was supposed to be a regular host but declined after her first… um… performance.
* Wes may have said it, but you agreed. Making you equally guilty.
* Sean would have called, but he was suffering from some kind of throat thing. Or so he told me via e-mail.
** Yeah, I e-mailed Sean to make sure he wouldn’t miss the last show.
** I didn’t want to be the only one feed-backing.
*** I’m not sure which of us that would have made more pathetic, but I think it’s you. (By you, I mean Volcanicast)
* I got my ticket today to see Kevin Smith/Scott Mosier at ‘Peabody’s Downunder’ (Sounds Australian, maybe Sam knows it?) on the 27th.
** So, barring catastrophe (Like Oboma’s death panel going after my mother-in-law) I’ll be in Cleveland then.
** Where’s a good place to buy roses to drop on Sam’s front steps?
* Actually, the more I think of it, my ex was NOT in the peanut gallery on that first show.
* The first one or two shows, we just listed the topics and did barely any research at all. The idea was to have a kind of panel discussion on the topics with no actual presenter.
* * Though I think we may have alternated days presenting.
* * The important thing is, though, that whoever was talking about a subject had done no research and was not considered the official presenter. They just read the topic and said “I don’t know what this is so can’t say anything about it.”
* * * So she did almost as much prep work as I, and probably about as much as Bob.
* * * * No jokes about Bob’s research in later shows.
* * So, if my ex was in the Peanut Gallery, then she is at best tied for first with Bob.
* * * And, potentially, with me.
* That’s all well and good, but in the first few minutes of the first show, you identify the female voice as “my wife, Lisa, who will be our peanut gallery” . . . nor does any of that change your wrongitude.
* Have been pulling episodes to pull ‘greatest moments’ for. An odious task that involves skimming through old shows.
** Less odious after Sam shows up, of course.
Whoops, didn’t close one of those tags properly. ah well…
I plead “No way in hell will I listen to that first show again.”
* I don’t blame you.
* I do want to snag at least one Chris moment for the
greatestless sucky hits show.* Because there were really funny moments, you just have to dig through the crap to get to them.
* But I have found several episodes with things to cut out of.
** Plus I’m going to cut every instance of Bob stammering, to see if I can make a 5 minute dance party mix of Bob stammer.
** To accompany the 3 minute dance party re-mix of the Um chorus.
Seagrams 151?? Gotta be Bacardi all the way…
And I’m sorry I deserted the show. I didn’t do it on purpose!! The last 3 weeks have been non-stop work and having to remedy broken things. :oP You guys have bad timing for ending it! I did call….
I know, it was lame. More fun being in person.
I can help balance the level of geekiness. Can I play on the next show??
* The Bacardi 151 is the one with all the flammable/inflammable warnings on it. It frightened me.
* They’d rather you dessert the show. I don’t even know what that means.
* On the other hand, there was a certain propriety to the final show being just the people who had hosted the longest.
* I’m not sure they want to balance the level of geekyness. I’m pretty sure they want it to be totally ultimate geekyness.
and now, the withdraw begins…
*I’ve been way ahead of you CN
*I wasn’t lying when I said the empty feeling.
*This particular bullet point means nothing to me.
*This particular bullet point means everything to me.
*And this particular bullet point went wee weee weeee all the way home.
@Hooters:
* I have no idea why I typed Seagrams up there. I meant Bacardi. I don’t even know if Seagrams MAKES a 151.
* * I suspect I was thinking “Seagrams 7″
* * * Makes you wonder, they call 7&7 “14″ (Yes, they are lame for doing so but they do) so could you order a “158″?
* Our goal on the next show is actually to not balance the geekiness so much as revel in it.
@Crazy Nutso:
* Just read the flammable warning on the bottle.
* * Holy crap I thought that was just a filter to slow down the pouring so bartenders could pour less!
* I almost - ALMOST recorded a beginning and then said “Naaw, just kidding”
* * I went so far as to consider appending our first show to the end to pad it out.
* * * But then I realized that was TOO evil.
@Will et al:
* You think you have withdrawl. I’ve been collecting volicanic topics nearly DAILY for nearly 2.5 years.
* * I only missed that one week in November of 2007, and other than that I don’t think I’ve missed 3 consecutive days.
* * * Because when I missed days, I had to do them all at once and it was kind of a pain.
* * * * But I still miss it. A little bit.
* Maybe you could do a show about what happened on a particular day in ‘geeky’ history.
** Nah, that’s a stupid idea. ;}
* Will spend a small portion of my vacation seeking out ‘greatest moments’ from old shows.
** Which is like ‘greatest moments from your last dental visit. It was probably right after the gas took effect, but before they started drilling.
Nutso, if you’re making dance remixes, how about making one singing the praises of “What?” As my letter stated, nobody says “What?” quite like Sam does.
I’m looking forward to the new show, as I have plenty of geeky vices. Bad movies, video games, Samurai Jack reruns. There’s going to be a sci-fi convention this weekend. I’m looking forward to that, too.
@Sean: I did think of that. I may be clipping out Sam’s ‘What!?’s as well. Or her ‘Que?’
TIGH was awesome to listen to. It was hell to record and worse to prep for.
TIGH?
And I big sad :o(
First the unfulfilling end to the Stargate Cafe, and now the end of Volcanicast.
Boo.
@Hooters: TIGH= Today In Geeky History. A short-lived podcast Wes did with his better half. It was pretty good. Then he stopped.
* Stargate Cafe may still be alive. You just have to find someone to produce, write & act in it. I’ll totally be Emma.
* Can’t argue, but maybe the next show will be even better. I have faith in Wes, even if he has faith in nothing.
* As long as he doesn’t accidentally lose more shows. ‘Cause that’s just annoying.
* I don’t have faith in Nothing. Nothing is very unreliable.
* Nothing is very unreliable? Actually, LOTS of things are very unreliable.
My kid is trying to learn how to draw ‘Trogdor’ from Strong Bad. Isn’t that adorable? No.
* Of course lots of things are unreliable. Lots of things includes, for me, nothing.
* Did you yell “CONSUMMATE V’s!” at him?
Of course I did.
Of course he did.
