What Are We Drinking?
February 20 2010 (SAT)
18. radium f (BOB)
- Formally, the chemical element Polonium
- - Atomic number 84
- - Tentatively named Radium F by discoverers Marie and Pierre Curie
- - - Later renamed in honor of Marie’s home country, Poland, which was not an independent nation at the time
- - Rare in nature due to a short half-life of all of its isotopes
- - It’s a radioactive neutron source and alpha emitter
- - - 250,000 times more toxic than hydrogen cyanide
- - - - Although relatively harmless unless ingested
- - - - - Alpha particles, essentially a helium nucleus (2 protons, 2 neutrons) can’t penetrate a sheet of paper
- - - - - - Let alone your epidermis
- - Notably used recently in the murder of Russian dissident Alexander Litvinenko in 2006
- Why now?
- - Jeopardy! rerun
- - - In Final Jeopardy, “The Elements”, Once called radium F, this element was named for the homeland of one of its discoverers
- - - - This was actually an undrafted topic FTWE 5/29/09, when this episode of Jeopardy! originally aired
17. apolo ohno yawning (He does it before racing)
15. daniel wade moore (Acquitted of murder)

11. adrienne shelly (SAM)
- Actress, writer and director for screen plays.
- Her most recient movie was Waitress that she wrote, co starred in and directed.
- A cute movie about demostic violence and how a woman portrays her moods in pies.
- Was picked up from the Sundance Film Fest in 2006,
- He tried to make it look like a suicide.
- His footprint gave it away…since Adrienne was wearing socks.
- But again, she was murdered in 2006.
- Why now?
- Her movie Waitress was on Lifetime.
9. ufc 110 live stream (UFC crap)
Related Terms: 20.ufc 110 results; 16.george sotiropoulos; 10.cain velasquez vs nogueira
8. cesar millan daddy (His dog. Died.)

7. close encounters of the third kind (WES)
- 1977 movie starring Richard Dreyfuss, Teri Garr, and a bunch of names I don’t recognize.
- - Directed by Steven Spielberg.
- - Details a fictional “First encounter” between humans and technologically superior - and thankfully peaceful - aliens.
- I think this is one of those “must see” movies to understand certain pop culture references.
- - Though I’ll admit it’s kind of slow at times.
- - - But it’s still good.
- In the movie, Dreyfuss’ character is compelled, along with a few dozen others, to travel to Devil’s Tower National Monument in Wyoming, where they are destined to meet the aliens in person.
- - Standing in his way are obstacles of varying difficulty, including Teri Garr (his wife), himself thinking he’s just going crazy, and the US millitary.
- Why now?
- - It played on TCM, a channel I don’t mind not having now that I don’t have cable.
6. glenn beck cpac speech (Great…)
4. super g downhill (BOB)
- Short for Super Giant Slalom
- - Although, you know, not much shorter
- - It’s obviously a discipline in Alpine skiing
- - - Considered a “speed” discipline versus the “technical” Giant Slalom and Slalom
- - First introduced on the World Cup level in 1982
- - - First contested in the Olympics in Calgary in 1988
- Why now?
- - The Olympic womens Super G took place in Vancouver
- - - Lindsey Vonn took bronze and Andrea Fischbacher of Austria took gold
3. jr celski tattoo (Olympic athlete. With a tattoo.)
2. splendor in the grass (1961 movie. On some channel probably.)
Related Term: 5.dorothy dandridge
1. lala brown (Musician. Murdered.)
February 21 2010 (SUN)
12. msnbc hd directv (WES)
Related Terms: 20.what channel is the usa vs canada hockey game on; 19.ryan miller goalie; 18.usa vs canada hockey score; 17.brian rafalski; 16.usa vs canada hockey channel; 13.chris drury
- Yaaay the US beat Canada in Hockey!
- - In the Olympics!
- - - U-S-A! U-S-A!
- - - - Wooooooooo Hoooooooooooo!
- What’s that you say about the finals?
- - I’m not listening!
- - - Lalalalalalalalala
- So before the Olympic Hockey game that will likely be discussed forever, there was another game.
- - It was a preliminary game so held little weight in the final decision.
- - - Obviously.
- - - The US won.
11. rebecca crews (In a new reality show on BET)
10. florence henderson (To publish her memoir. Her sexy, sexy Brady memoir)

4. joe depinto (SAM)
- 7/11 CEO.
- They put him in a store that sells 2500 cups of coffee a day.
- And he had trouble making coffee.
- And he had trouble cleaning.
- Why does this store have 2500 cups of okish coffee?
- Because the check out chick Delories apparently knows all the customers.
- While juggling her 5 children and being on dialysis.
- SHe should be running the company not Joe Depinto.
- Why now though?
- Undercover boss again.
- Nothing scathing that I could find though.
- I gotta watch this show, it sounds intreging to watch CEO’s do pleb work.
- And I didn’t realise that 7/11 was named for the day it opened. I thought it was 7 days open until 11 pm.
1. bloom box (WES)
Related Terms: 9.bloom energy stock symbol; 6.bloom energy fuel celll; 2.bloom energy
- New fuel cell technology
- - Bloom Energy company
- - And it’s a box.
- - - So that’s where they got the name.
- Eventually, it’s planned on being a brick-sized cell that can power a house.
- - Right now, it’s a refrigerator-sized cell that will power a house.
- Takes Oxygen and fuel
- - Releases energy
- - - And no emissions.
- - - - Which is odd to me. If you feed it natural gas, where does it go?
- - - This is not simply burning the fuel for energy however.
- - - - Though I could not find information on exactly what WAS going on in there.
- The boxes are already being used by some big name businesses.
- - Google, FedEx, WalMart.
- - - eBay says after installing 5 Bloom Boxes 9 months ago, they’ve saved $100,000 in electricity costs.
- - - - Though the boxes currently cost about $750,000
- - - - - So quick math, they spent 3,750,000 and in 1 year they’ll save about $133,000.
- - - - - - So they need to run the cells for about 30 years to make their investment back.
- - - - - - - And then it’s gravy.
- Why now?
- - 60 Minutes did a special on them.
February 22 2010 (MON)
Related Term: 2.bloom energy

14. samantha bell (Daughter of the douche who crashed his plane into an IRS building. Said he was a hero, then recanted)
12. air car (BOB)
- Three-wheeled, light-weight deathbox
- - Called Airpod, it’s expected to be on the market this year
- - Runs on compressed air
- - - Which, like most alternate fuel vehicles, simply moves the burning of oil to a less efficient place
- - - - Your local power plant
- - - - - Which converts it to electricity at a loss, transmits it at a loss, compresses the air at a loss, and then you carry the weight of that air around with you, which is surprisingly substantial
- - - Carries enough air for 120 miles at 30 or 50 MPH
- - - - Estimated cost is $8-11k
- - Driver enters through the windshield and controls the vehicle by joystick

10. lincoln tunnel (SAM)

8. cambridge credit counseling (Scam. Unable to do business now due to new credit rules? Discussed on The View?)
7. national margarita day (WES)
Related Term: 9.national margarita day 2010
- Why doesn’t anybody mention this kind of thing beforehand?
- - Though, to be honest, I’m not a huge fan.
- - - I can have one at a mexican restaurant or something, but I’m not going to get drunk off them.
- Margaritas are a tequila-based cocktail
- - Generally mixed with triple-sec and lime or lemon juice.
- - - Served in a stemmed glass, frequently with salt on the rim
- - As with most mixed drinks, there are more origin stories to Margaritas than there are variations.
- - - Generally, though, the drink is ascribed to Mexico or at least Mexican bartenders.
- Why now?
- - It was national Margarita Day.
- - - And again, I ask why I wasn’t informed ahead of time.
6. shakespeare trilogy (BOB)
- MacBeth
- - Macbeth Reloaded
- - - And Macbeth Revolutions
- Not really. And that leads me to…
- Why now?
- - On Jeopardy!
- - - Final Jeopardy, “Kings & Literature”, Though called “the most hapless of monarchs”, this king is in the title of Shakespeare’s only trilogy
- - - - Correct response was Henry VI
- - - - - Which had sequels, Parts 2 and 3

5. prvcy jeans (WES)
- Brand of jeans.
- - I don’t know if “Prvcy” is an acronym, or if it perhaps means “Privacy”
- - - Or Pervocity
- - - - Or Perv City
- - - - - New DLC for Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 4
- - Actually it does stand for “Privacy”
- - - Though I still don’t know the connection between privacy and wanting people to stare at your butt.
- Why now?
- - They went viral.
- - - Here’s a video which is obviously a commercial, but was not shown on TV.
- - They’re not all bad.
- - - First off, the right woman looks pretty nice in their jeans.
- - - - As the show notes pic proves.
- - - Secondly, they donate to Breast Cancer research.
- - - - Yay!
- - However, there is some bad.
- - - The wrong woman doesn’t look all that great in their jeans.
- - - - Maybe it’s the models they picked, but I actually don’t like the way they look in almost every picture I see.
- - - They’re expensive, even for fashion jeans.
- - - - The cheap ones are over $100, and the “Premium” jeans can easly break $200.
- Why now?
- - Their viral campaign finally took off.
- - - IOW, it was on TV.

When I last left off, I had delivered a one-two punch to the Nazis that had seriously limited their ability to pillage and burn. It was time for the masterstroke that would give us victory in the Culture War; an assault on the Nazi propaganda network in Paris. I’d been vandalizing propaganda speakers throughout the city as part of my sabotage activities, but now I would have a chance to do some real damage.
The Nazis had set up a broadcast tower and transmitter in the innermost courtyard of the Louvre. It was heavily guarded, but I swore that I would bring the whole thing down. The speeches from Berlin and the lies about the Resistance were bad enough, but those godless goose-steppers were committing a crime I could never forgive them for.
They were broadcasting polka music.
I slipped onto the grounds of the Louvre just as night was falling. There were tanks patrolling, guard towers, spotlights. I thought about stealing a guard’s uniform, trying the subtle approach. Then I saw what the Nazis had left unattended, and came up with a new plan. I was going to borrow one of their tanks.
Driving a tank is a bit more difficult than driving a race car, but I managed to join the tank patrol routes without attracting suspicion. By the time the Nazis realized I had left the normal route, I was opening fire on their emplacements. Deafening explosions sent soldiers cartwheeling through the air as I crashed into the courtyard, a final tank shell collapsing the tower into a twisted heap of scrap.
As I threw the tank in reverse and tried to make my escape, a Panzershrek rocket slammed into the side of my tank and the damn thing caught fire. I bailed out and ran for the bushes as the tank exploded behind me, then threw myself over a wall and back onto the street. I barely had time to catch my breath when a Gestapo cruiser pulled up in front of me. Those cars were death on wheels, quite literally. A racing engine, an armored body and twin machine guns on the hood to complete the package. As its driver was getting out, I was already getting in, hitting the gas, and taking off.
The Nazis were turning the city upside-down looking for me. Simply running and hiding wasn’t an option. The time had come to take a stand against the invaders. I radioed in to Resistance HQ and told them my plan. We would meet the enemy head-on at the Arc de Triomphe. The Culture War had started there. Now, we were going to finish it.
As the cruiser roared onto the Champs Elysee, I saw that the Resistance was already fighting. They had set up under the Arc itself, and were managing to hold their own against the foe. I pulled up, got out, manned the heavy machine gun, and started mowing down anyone wearing a swastika that I could see. The Nazi line began to weaken, then fall back. I whipped out the ol’ Siegfaust, sent a grenade into the middle of their reinforcements, and that broke them. They scattered like rats, and the day was ours.
For me, the Culture War was over. The Resistance had scored a victory against the occupying forces. And they even let me keep the cruiser.

- - - Generally, if you highly value BOTH freedoms, you are one of those total wackjob libertarians.
- - - And finally, if you highly value NEITHER freedom, you are a pinko facist commie totalitarian douchebag.
- - The diagram is frequently displayed as a diamond, so the typical “Left” and “Right” leanings that are common in America are actually on the left and right, respectively.
- I took this test.
- - Several of the questions were hard to answer because my exact views were not options.
- - - But I’m a complex guy.

Explicit Warning if missed

Yuck. This was started with total cheese. Don’t think Mr. Hooters and I will be doing that again…
* We like the cheese!
* That chick is probably Scottish. A bagpipe would totally complete that image.
* You know who would look good in those jeans? Oprah.
* You totally should have spanked Sam on the air. HAWT!
* Assuming you’re talking about the week ending date, I liked the cheese so much I extended the low-volume section of the music by about 3 seconds to fit it in. I don’t do that for just anybody, you know.
* @Crazy_Nutso: You will die for putting the image of Oprah in those jeans in my head.
C’mon, man that is a FINE ass!
Uh, I agree with Wessle. I need to go scrub my brain now…
Wessle? Is he a Nuclear Wessle? I find your lack of faith in Oprah’s ass disturbing.
* But to get off the topic of Oprah’s backside (AS IF WE COULD!)
* Here’s this week’s Volcanipedia entry!
* http://www.crazynutso.com/volcanipedia/tiki-index.php?page=Week+Ending+February+26+2010
* Lots of rather pointless links!
* My spot on the Nolan Chart is WAY Libertarian. If only there was an ‘Anarchist’ corner.
* Hooters is funny.
* I REALLY hope Sean’s Board Game Babe doesn’t listen to this.
* But why should she be any different from everyone else?
* Déjà vu
* Make sure Bob knows that ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ is now out on DVD.
* I probably read it as a kid, but have no memory of it.
* It’s no ‘Monster at the end of the book’. I’m just sayin’.
* You know who else would look good in those jeans? (evil chuckle) Janet Reno.
Volcanipedia point-by-point:
* (show notes) You have an unhealthy obsession with Oprah in jeans.
* She only had one drink. In the studio. Who knows what she had before she arrived.
* You are correct at my ignorance at the cast of Waitress. You are also likely correct as to why Netflix suggests it. However, it thinks I’d only give it 3 stars so I’m gonna pass.
* Déjà vu
* You say “Hopefully she doesn’t listen to this podcast” as if that makes her unique.
* * Not unique in not listening. Unique in that she shouldn’t listen.
* I am a pretty pretty princess.
* Pew pew pew!
* That was a fun correction to record :-)
* I’m not sure (because I have yet to put it together) but I think there’s more Sam-in-the-bathroom fun in the tangents.
* (end blooper) I’m serious. We’ve recorded almost 150 episodes and not ONCE has a helicopter flown overhead during recording. and they pick 10 minutes after we mention the Argentinian town to do so. Classic.
* No, YOU have an unhealthy obsession with NOT Oprah in jeans. Or something.
* Whatever the cause, she was in great form. She may make the show longer (to Drew’s chagrin) but also awesomer.
* I only know because it was also recomended to me for the same reason.
* So put your tiny hand in mine,
* I’d say it’d be the first one, but the second one is likely as well. I totally confirm not saying I deny the truthyness of that statement.
* I’m sure you are.
* church bench, church bench, church bench!
* Yeah, I bet it was.
* Looking forward to tangentcast. Hopefully, we hear the flush. Or the splash. Maybe it’s good that I wasn’t there…
* Ah a helicopter. I thought the AC or a fan had kicked in or something. Awesome.
* The helicopter was probably the police, looking for me, because you’d convinced them I was using illegal drugs.
* MY HIGH IS TOTALLY LEGAL! STONED? STONED LIKE A FOX!
* Still, it was a fun voice mail, both to record and to hear reaction to.
I did not consume any alcohol prior to my arrival, I was driving. I think I’d be in BIG trouble if I put those two together…..
It was more than enough, especially for a “school night”.
Drew can quit complaining. Even without me there, he thinks it’s too long. Theoretically he could listen to the first half on the way in to work, and the second on the way home. His drive is plenty long that way.
BTW Wes, we should totally record something on St. Patty’s Day.
I think it’d be funny to hear what our drunken mayhem sounds like!!
* Your drunken mayhem frightens me.
* At least she stopped calling you ‘Wessle’.
I actually call him that quite often. Kinda just started falling out of my face one day….. :o)
* Hooters has all kinds of weird names for stuff.
* And terms… :o)
* And emoticons
* Recording on St. Pat’s, while a fine idea, may not be practical depending on the group. We usually end up with 8-20 people by the end of the night and really, more than 5 in the studio is difficult.
* * More than 5 DRUNK people and I’d start worrying about the equipment.
* * * If said aloud, that would have made an awesome out-of-context line.
* Is this a format I’m supposed to follow?
* I don’t make stuff up on purpose, my brain is always on auto-pilot. My body’s just the vehicle…
* We just do a late late night for those of us not working first thing the next morning. That’s gotta be less than 5. Although I know exactly how I am when I’m trashed - not suitable for anything that requires coherency. Though I still think it’d be hilarious to record our group’s drunken pleasures.
* Format? Try religion. ALL HAIL THE HOLY BULLET POINT!
* Also, life is a highway, so you’re all set.
* You’ve been coherent?
* Wessles is currently passed out on NyQuil. Hopefully he took the time to record a voice mail before succumbing to the sweet, sweet bliss.
If you don’t do bullet points, the way this blog’s comments are formatted can make the paragraphs difficult to read.
Especially the longer paragraphs that loop around beyond one line. Those ones are the worst because when they loop around, you can’t always tell when there’s a new thought.
The worst is when it loops around and there’s a new sentence right where it word wrapped.
I started doing it when replying to Crazy Nutso’s Volcanipedia entries, because I was saying 10-20 unrelated things all at once.
And it got confusing quickly.
Everybody else has adopted it, I know not why.
I assume it’s such a great idea they wanted to be like me.
But they’re probably all just making fun of me
Anyway, Tangentcast has been posted! http://planetretcon.com/podcast/volcanicast_tangentcast_20100226.mp3
It’s more like a star though, not really a true bullet.
- Now that’s a bullet. And I don’t have to hit shift to get it. :oPPPPP
- Wes, Nyquil better fix your sickness! You’ve got 13 days to be 100% healthy!!
- Though I’d much prefer you be healthy starting now….
* Tangentcast Feed is updated as well.
* Bullet Points are teh R0ck0r.
* Or something.
= NyQuil can’t fix your sickness, it just gets you high enough that you don’t mind.
= There are also various daytime sick pills that can allow you to function at work & such.
= But you’re better off taking a few days and doing NOTHING but sleep.
= You can also go to a doctor, to get a note to show your boss when you feel better.
= Assuming you don’t feel silly asking a doctor for a note to give to your boss, excusing your absence.
= Will the doctor help you get better? I dunno. They’ll usually give you some pills. Whether or not the pills, or the rest fixes you is a question best left up to the individual.
And I totally forgot to post a HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO SAM message on Thursday. I fail at Stalker!
* Again, I would like to state how the existence (and composition) of the bullet point is a matter of choice by each member of the Volcanicast community.
* i.e., If you prefer dashes, YOU GO GIRL.
:oPPPPPPPPPPPP
B===D
* Well now you guys are just padding teh post count.
* Your point?
A penis!! HILARIOUS!!!
Twig and berries!! HILARIOUS!!!
* Hey ‘Wessles’! Hooters finds your penis to be hilarious.
* Oh, I’m sorry, it’s HILARIOUS.
What and odd reaction to seeing a penis. I feel bad for your husband now.
Ok, there was something wrong with this site yesterday.
That first comment would not post. It kept telling me it was already posted, but it wasn’t there.
I thought it might be the word penis it didn’t like or something done, so I changed the wording. Now
it looks like I’m doubly excited. What was wrong with this thing yesterday?
Today I look at it and the first thing that comes to mind is Pinocchio……
Anyone else see that?
I don’t know about the posting, but all morning I’ve had trouble loading pages. I’m getting a little perturbed.
and by perturbed, he means erect.
Why are you thinking about Wesley’s erection??
Oh you thought Crazy Nutso was stalking SAM?
* I have enough stalk for the entire cast.
* And the peanut gallery.
* Besides, how can I not think about it, it’s HILARIOUS!
* Man, we’re gonna go over 40. New record?
And I was totally going to SKYPE in this week, too.
Stupid peanut gallery people.
Unless it’s Hooters. Hooters is awesome!
Oh look, we got to 40. What a surprise.
* Well you can be “happy” about the fact that I’ve decided to not edit the show except around the times where there’s music, and just post it as is.
* So it’ll be like you were there, but not talking.
* So imagine that you’re Sean.
