What Are We Drinking?
November 14 2009 (SAT)
13. what is the name of appulous caching algorithm (#1)
12. wedding daze (2004 movie, on Comedy Central?)
11. who wrote the very first auto cracking bash script (#1)
10. ramiele malubay (Former American Idol contestant, sang Anthem at #3)
9. tcu vs utah (College Football crap)
8. pat allanson (Murderer, on a “real story” Lifetime Movie)

7. singapura cat (BOB)
- Breed of cat
- - Somewhat less cool than the multiFOTS Savannah cat
- - Smallish, stocky, brown-ticked cats
- - - Ticked means the individual hairs have alternating bands of color
- - Takes its name for the traditional name of Singapore
- - - Which means Lion City in Malay
- - The breed is based on three foundation cats, a male and a female from a single litter and another female
- - - Originally claimed to have been bred naturally in Singapore
- - - - These cats were actually brought to Singapore by the American breeder who had claimed their discovery
- Why now?
- - On Cats 101
- - - A show on Animal Planet
6. what is haklabs favorite food (More with #1)
5. who was the admin of hakstore (I’m lumping this with #1)

4. care bears on fire (WES)
- All girl Pop/Punk band from Brooklyn.
- - Except the Brooklyn thing, this is why I took the topic, sight unseen.
- - - Not that I have anything against Brooklyn, I’m indifferent twoards it.
- - - Pop/Punk girl bands, on the other hand, I love.
- - The band members are currently Freshmen and Sophomores in high school.
- - - Which could explain the rest of what I have to say.
- - I don’t like them all that much.
- - - They have this attempt-to-be-edgy-but-don’t-actually-make-it sound.
- - - However, they play well (enough for me. Disclaimer: I know jack squat about music, but I know what I like) and sing well and I hope, some day, they’ll put out an album I’ll want to buy.
- - - - Although I don’t think American Greetings, the owners of the Care Bears brand, will be very happy about it.
- - - - - But a good lawsuit can do a band wonders, I guess.
- Why now?
- - They guest starred on the Nickelodeon TV show True Jackson VP.
- - - It seems to be a fictional show, so I assume they were the band that played at the local place that would never have a band if it wasn’t in a TV show.

5. verizon hub (WES)
- Home device from (duh) Verizon
- - Purports to sync all of your Verizon products (hence the name)
- - If you use Verizon for everything - voice, data, cable, cell - then you will get the most out of the Hub.
- - - However, most everything you can do with the Hub, you can do easier with just a laptop with an internet connection, or an iPhone.
- - Also, not too many people use Verizon for everything.
- - - Which is why, after announcing this beast in February 2009, axed it quicker than Fox cancles a Joss Whedon show.
- Why now?
- - It was advertised during the Colts-Patriots game
- - - Nobody can figure out why.
4. groats disease (Dunno what it is, but it was on Curb Your Enthusiasm)
3. bill belichick (#2)
2. belichick (NE Patriots’ coach. Made a decent call that turned out bad)
1. bone marrow donation (BOB)
- In your bone marrow are hematopoietic stem cells
- - Undifferentiated cells which, among other things, replenish your blood cells
- - - It is possible to transplant these cells from one patient to another
- - - - Or a patient to himself at a later date
- - - - - When the recipient is unable to make marrow of his own
- - - - - - Particularly, leukemia patients
- - - While there are no known long term ill effects of marrow donation for the donor
- - - - In the short term, it’s an unpleasant experience, which means there’s a shortage of marrow
- - - - - Under general anesthesia, they poke a needle the size of a straw through your pelvis
- - - - - - Then they draw out a significant quantity of your marrow
- - - - - - - This leads to a fairly slow and painful recovery
- Why now?
- - On Extreme Makover: Home Edition
- - - The family of Joey Stott, a recipient, received a new home
- - - - And her donor, Tom Wilhelm, was a special guest
- - The show drew attention to the “Be The Match” marrow registration drive

11. geraci s pizza cleveland (WES)
- Pizza restaurant in Cleveland, OH
- - On Warrensville Center Road, between Fairmount and Cedar.
- - I’ve driven by it - recently - but I’ve never noticed it.
- - I couldn’t find a LOT of reviews for it, but those I found were GUSHING.
- - - If it was possible to LITERALLY gush in a review, these reviews would have done it.
- - I think we should make it a point to go there, maybe next month some time.
- Why now?
- - According to one source, the 17th (Tomorrow) was the beginning of Cleveland Pizza Week.
- - - I feel I should have been aware of this.
- - According to every other source I could find, Cleveland Pizza Week is in March
- - - Again, I feel I should know this, but at least that’s 4 months away.
- - So I don’t know why now.
10. meteor shower november 2009 (It totally happened)
9. jeffrey herbst (Going to be the president of… Colgate?)

8. shuttle launch (BOB)
- The space shuttle Atlantis launched successfully today from Kennedy Space Center
- - Bound for the International Space Station with supplies and modules
- - - They’ll also pick up Station crew member Nicole Stott and bring her back to Earth
- This launch is also notable due to NASA inviting some of their Twitter followers to view the launch
- - Had I but known!

- - Best known for hosting one of MTV’s earliest non-music-video shows, Remote Control
- - - The TV rerun trivia show also helped launch the careers of Adam Sandler, Denis Leary, Colin Quinn, and the yummalicious Kari Wuhrer
- Why now?
- - Ken died at his home at age 52
- - - The cause is not readily apparent

1. pink slips for congress (WES)
- Astroturf effort sponsored by corporations who get people to do their bidding.
- - Like the Tea Parties, the birther movement, and the “You Lie” guy.
- - This time around, they’re mailing congress pink slips, essentially saying “I won’t vote for you if you pass the health care bill”
- - - I am still torn on the health care bill.
- - - - Frankly, I would love FOX news to tell me how to feel.
- - - - - It’s kind of like religion, though. I just can’t believe they’re right, in the absense of evidence.
- - - - - - Or in the presence of evidence to the contrary.
- - - - - - - Anyway.
- - My big problem with this is that every non-FOX-news poll out there says that the majority of Americans want not just health care insurance reform, they prefer the public option.
- - - Maybe they need to send congress “light blue slips” saying they won’t vote for them unless they pass the health care bill.
- Why now?
- - It was covered.
- - - On FOX.
- 1 from someone with a chip on his shoulder
- 1 from Jamie
Voice Mail (216-925-4263)
- 1 from Drew
- - Aloha gonna be in stocks, this is true, just calling it a couple of comments I wasn’t sure it sounded to me Westley like in your description of cared for you on a new this week. You may have magel the story a little bit. If I if I recall correctly, at least, which I could, the not, we’re going directly. She wasn’t actually miss america. She was this is Miss California and lost the pageant and going to the fact that she lost on one of the judges. I believe might have even been parental asking her what her thoughts on gay marriage word. Basically and packing her for her as as I can do that. I think I was. If you don’t mind. She’s she complained to the pageant over that and then they and then drop complaint because they were they’re awarding some over her. I think possibly about a boob job that one of the judges or the past itself may have paid for and then this anything actually, i think was doing but the pageant themselves had, it was, it was. B. T. M, the website. I’m pretty sure came out that a we’ve got our hands on the specs tape of her at, but we’re not going to release it, so I don’t know that the tape actually has gone out to the people who have it. Don’t if you’re duplicate any where they basically just that we’ve got a video of caring for John starting the macaroni and, will you know, we’re we’re not gonna put it out there, but I think that’s and that was when she went. Nevermind and drop all that with pageant. They started scrabbling Packer the other day I was doing this is Bob mcGrath third you’d been talking about mcGrath from Sesame Street. If you’re not clear on the bob is bob with the white guy on sesame street as far as I know the only white adult male character on the show. There was also gordon. I was black and Louis Louis South American of some just ends. I’m not quite sure where from. Specifically, but Bob was is short brown hair, so I can. This is Mister. Cooper, I’m pretty sure the only white male on the show and I actually met Bob mcGrath the court at, but I sang with our cappella vocal quartet. I sing with in college called Invisible and did a a concert where the four of us backed up. Bob mcGrath on a song he had written and so I hung out with them back stage for a little bit and he’s very sweet guy. Definitely not straight at all. Bye. It’s really cool, great voice, fun, fun. Dude, and glad that he is still on the show. That’s all I had to say a long, winded as usual. Take care guys. See you soon.

- - - But now, they’re using it to make paper, fuel to power the sugar mill (and some extra to sell back to the grid), and now airtight food containers to replace styrofoam
- Why now?
- - On WWTBAM
- - - For $25,000, in Going Green, Growing in popularity as an environmental-friendly alternative to plastic and styrofoam, bagasse is made primarily from what? A) Cornstalks, B) Sugarcane, C) Palm leaves, or D) Soybean oil

2. nephelococcygia (WES)
- There are as many ways to pronounce this word as there are websites that show its pronunciation.
- - I’m going with “Nuh fee low cocks uh gee yuh”
- Sexual attraction to dead male chickens
- - Not so much
- From the Greek, literally translates to “Cloud Cuckoo Land”
- - In a play by Aristophanes entitled The Birds, all the birds in the world build this city in the clouds.
- - - Hitchcock adapted the story to present day in 1963
- - - George Lucas did similar in 1980
- These days, it is the official name of Cloud Watching
- - In particular, finding patterns in clouds.

- - - Also known as Concours mondial de la Cuisine or World Cuisine Contest
- - - - Sometimes unofficially called the culinary equivalent of the Olympic Games
- - Founded by chef Paul Bocuse
- - Held biannually
- - It’s been dominated by French and Norweigian chefs
- - The format is thus:
- - - One head chef, two chefs, and an assistant chef, who must be under 22 years of age have 5 and a half hours to prepare elaborate presentations of one meat dish and one fish dish
- - - - A jury then evaluates each dish in terms of technical skill, cooking sophistication, creativity, and visual beauty
- Why now?
- - Paul Bocuse’s son, Jerome, was on the judges panel for this week’s episode of Top Chef
- - - The contestants’ challenge was to prepare a dish with similar elaborate presentation to those of the Bocuse d’Or
- - - - The winning contestant also earned the right to compete with the American team at the next Bocuse d’Or

- - At the time, her husband was being inducted in the College Football Hall of Fame
- - At the time, she was also a breast cancer survivor.
- - - In fact, I distinctly remember reading that she had beaten breast cancer and was going to live.
- - - - I cannot find that now, of course.
- - - - Sadly, that article - and therefore I - was wrong about her beating cancer.
- Why now?
- - She died, finally succumbing to cancer.
- - During this Saturday’s OSU football game, the players were all wearing various pink things, and had stickers with “SS” on their helmets, in honor of Stefanie.

4. overton window (WES)
- Concept in political theory
- - Named for its theorizer, John Overton
- - It defines a window in the range of public reactions to political events.
- - Overton also described moving the window, by promoting ideas that were previously outside the window.
- - - This can make ideas that were previously deemed cutting-edge and scandalous seem normal.
- - - - Given time.
- - - It also can make idea that were once normal, seem fringe and wacky.
- - - - Again, given time.
- - - For example, Gay Marriage was not an issue on the public stage until the window could move over it, pushing hate crimes into the fringes.
- - - - Gay people cannot currently get married, but the fact that we’re discussing it now makes simply being gay more acceptable, in general, to the public.
- - - Another example, discussion of how best to torture prisoners was unthinkable during the cold war, but the window has moved.
- - - - Hopefully it will move back eventually.
- Why now?
- - Glenn Beck discussed it on his show.
- - - Which makes the whole topic less fun.
3. blorenge mountain (#2)
2. blorenge (BOB)
- A mountain in southeast Wales
- - It’s 1833 feet high and overlooks the valley of the River Usk
- - Used as a takeoff point for hang gliders
- - Otherwise unremarkable
- - - Except that its name rhymes with orange
- - - - A word famously hard to (and often thought impossible to) rhyme in English
- Why now?
- - WWTBAM
- - - In their Tournament of Ten
- - - - The 1,000,000 dollar question, in Vocabulary, is A rare example of a word that rhymes with “orange,” the Blorenge is a what? A) A River in Ireland, B) A Forest in Scotland, C) A Mountain in Wales, or D) A Desert in Australia
- - - - - Contestant walks away with $250,000, but her guess of C) would have been correct
- - - - - - This makes previous contestant Sam Murry a millionaire because, apparently, someone in the tournament was going to win, and he got his million dollar question right
- - - - - - - Which makes me wonder why he didn’t get his million bucks anyway?
1. climate depot (Anti-global-warming group. Broke the law)

Explicit Warning if missed

* Of course there’s a fucking Volcanipedia entry!
* http://www.crazynutso.com/volcanipedia/tiki-index.php?page=Week+Ending+November+20+2009
* Of course there are bullet points.
* Occasionally, I feel the need to delete something useless I’ve created.
* I’m sure the 4 people following me on Twitter will get over the loss.
* Sadly, that’s not even hyperbole, I only had 4 real followers.
* I actually did stop commenting on HoNoToGoABo for fear of offending Bob, as I’m an insensitive doche nozzle, and don’t enjoy offending people nearly as much as I seem to.
* I trashed my blog because it had even less people looking at it then my twitter page, and it was stupid.
* Volcanipedia will continue, at least until I have to renew the subscription, or whatever, but if I’ve got enough OT I can probably afford to waste money on this nonesense some more.
* Welcome back, Sam! Maybe if you post a snippy comment about how I’m hurting your feelings, I’ll totally stop.
* But probably not.
* But yes, as soon as NaNoWrMo and visiting relatives and lots of overtime is over, I’ll totally edit again.
Good to see you’re still here! I’d hate to have to start remembering the numbering of the episodes myself.
Okay, let’s bullet point the bejezus out of this mofo:
* You have to admit that vanishing off of Twitter, trashing your blog, and otherwise doing a big “poof” off of the internet all within a few hours was odd.
* I would have edited them out too, but no editing this week.
* Or next week.
* Actually, I did do a little editing, but not too much. I didn’t even listen to the last half of the show before posting.
* Thanks for the link to the Twilight Panties. I knew I’d forget.
* I won a Parsec Award. That wasn’t dumb :)
* While failing to edit much, I dinged the bell on occasion just to annoy the cat. Turnaround is fair play, I say.
* Were I drinking anything when I read “Voicemail from Drew, that probably extends the length of the show beyond the length he likes” I would be out buying a new laptop right now.
* Nono, I didn’t say the link didn’t go anywhere. I said it wasn’t a link. You have the text “http://www.crazynutso.com/volcanipedia” on your page but it’s not clickable.
* Nice background, by the way. Reminds me of my grandmother’s couch.
* The torture time discussion was fun to have. I haven’t heard it yet but I hope it’s as fun to listen to. When writing my show notes, I fully intended that to be a quick jab but we turned it into a session at the punching bag.
* I’m telling you, it’s totally clickable.
* The background is suppose to look like a rubber room background. It dates back to my ‘running a fan site for MTV’s Daria’ days.
* Which was another website that got taken down suddenly.
* Ironically (or not) I didn’t work overtime and haven’t been asked in on my days off yet. But I’m totally going to try for some NaNo goodness, also I’m doing Thanksgiving on Wed, as there’s no way in hell I’m getting the actual Holiday off.
* I just checked the source. It’s enclosed in <link> and </link> tags. Is that something IE accepts? Because it ain’t W3C.
* * What the LINK tag is for.
* * How to make an actual link.
Oh, and you had other points too that I forgot about:
* I approve of this background.
* I partook in the Thanksgiving feast on Sunday.
* I am also working on the day of Thanksgiving.
* Instead of writing, I’ve been watching Stargate. That is why I’m talking like Teal’c.
* Indeed.
* I don’t us IE, and I’m deeply offended that you would think that I do.
* I think I used ‘link’ because I couldn’t remember how to make a simple link in html code, and was too lazy to look it up.
* I should have known ‘link’ wasn’t right, because that’s too simple.
* I think it’s fixed, but what do I know about coding?
* What browser do you use? I’m curious what browser accepts a LINK tag as a clickable link.
* You make a link here every week. Or do you do something other than “a href” and Wordpress magically fixes it?
* It works now. In a real browser.
* I use Firefox.
* No, wordpress just makes the link, i just put in http://www.whatever.com and it magically makes it into a link.
* I used to know how to program in CoBol (and also remember which letters to capitalize) and Ada. Not no more!
* It’s really sad the way we pad the post count here.
*YAY Sam’s back.
*I missed the feminine aspect of the show….
*Though I still think Sam is a TOmboy
*Wes no longer has to pretend he’s a girl.
* I enjoy Bob & Wes’ takes on what Sam sounds like.
* and the fact that they’re still alive proves she hasn’t heard them.
* Had my thanksgiving today. Turkey, slow-cooker stuffing (Because the store bought stuff sucks, appearantly) Baked Potatoes, store-bought mashed potatoes (because I didn’t feel like making them) cranberry sauce (fresh from the can) dinner rolls (fresh from the bag) and Sara Lee Pumkin Pie (because the store was sold out of the canned pumkin pie mix, and I’m way too lazy to mix the whole thing from ’scratch’ (and by scratch, I mean canned pumkin, canned whatever the hell else goes into it, etc)) Even got out the fancy eatin’ plates, the fancy drinkin’ cups, and actually ate at our fancy eatin’ table. Yes, it’s the one time of the year we eat at the table.
* Tommorow begins the orgy of overtime!
* But I never said I wouldn’t or couldn’t edit, I just said it might take an extra day. However, such is Wes’ devotion to his audience, that he decided to do it himself. Or some shit.
* I’m not even going to hit 20K at nano. I suck.
* I had been considering trying the show out “raw” for some time now, the potential added editing day was just a convenient excuse to actually do it.
* I haven’t listened to the whole thing yet, but suspect it turned out pretty good.
* I’d love to hear opinions.
* I am on the verge of … not quite throwing in the towel on NaNoWriMo, but modifying my goal to “finish the current story” instead of “reach 50,000 words.”
* If i can get another 7-10k words in during the next 5 days, I think I’ll just nab it.
* And really, who can’t pull a measly 2k a day?
* I found the ums really noticable, but that might just be because I’m used to cutting them.
* Other then that It doesn’t matter, except when some doche nozzle usues someone’s name or something.
* I won’t be skyping in until after December (It’s my lil’ xmas gift to Sam) if then. The show does go smoother w/o it.
* good luck on NaNoWriMo, not just to Wes, but also to Blob.
* I did as well, though we may be the only two who did.
* I did like the show otherwise. Even with the stories interspersed into the topics. Though one cricket story and the whole thing goes down the tubes.
* The show does tend to go quicker with no skyping. In addition to the extra person, there’s the constant “What’d you say?” to deal with. I don’t know how all-skype podcasters do it.
* I really expected to get some writing done tonight. I got *0*. I believe I’ve failed another NaNoWriMo.
* What is sad is I also notice ‘ums’ in other people’s podcasts.
* The main reason I cut out any good story is to get the show down to an hour, and then only because I know the good story will be up for the ‘diehard’ fans as a tangentcast. Cricket stories, on the other hand, well no one wants those.
* I think those all-skype podcasts are probably better edited (the ‘can you repeat that’ moments are cut) and also done by people who use skype a lot more then just for the show. That’s my assumption, anyhow.
* I didn’t expect to finish NaNo, but I’m moderately happy with the story concept I’ve developed, and I may try to finish it, with my goal being to finish it before NEXT November, which is a far more realistic goal for my level of writingness. Then the next NaNo can be for the sequel.
* Hope that the continuing adventures of the Crimson Lien do see the light in some medium or another.
Oh do not fear. NaNo was not the main goal this November and I still hope to reach the actual goal of “2 completed Crimson Lien stories.” I’m quite close to finishing the 2nd story and when I do, I’ll move right into editing the pair. Then, I’ll be releasing them in some fashion as a set.
Also looking forward to the return of Sam ‘research’.
I’m not going to spoil anything, but we have at least 1 and perhaps 2 surprises in the next episode, and they both are related to who is doing what research.
While one of the surprises is not a particularly GOOD surprise, neither of them are BAD surprises.
I just think it’s awesome that ‘Hooters’ is the new regular e-mailer.
I’ve been to Geraci’s… I grew up about two blocks from there. It’s good, but I prefer Dewey’s. The “Why Now” is that Food Network featured them — http://www.cleveland.com/sun/all/index.ssf/2009/11/geracis_restaurant_in_universi.html
Oh, and to clarify the location, it’s actually at the corner of Warrensville and Silsby / Washington… a couple hundred yards south of Cedar next to a florist. The place where we got our wedding bands made was above it, but is now across the street.
