What Are We Drinking?

============================

Jun 7, 2008 (SAT)

  • 15.paul cortez (BOB)

    - Convicted killer

    - - Sentenced to 25 years

    - - - BOB SKIP #1

  • Carlton Pearson
  • 14.carlton pearson (WES)

    - Preacher and bishop for the Church of God in Christ

    - But not a total douche.

    - Pronounced false that the concept that just not knowing about Christ will send you straight to Hell when you die.

    - - Who does he think he is, the Pope? You can’t just change the rules on a whim, you know.

    - - - Unless people are leaving your church and you need to attract more of the community.

    - - He calls this The Gospel Of Inclusion

    - - - Upon preaching it, the numbers in his congregation began to decline.

    - - - - See above. You’re doing it wrong.

    - - In March of 2004, Pearson was pronounced a heretic

    - - - Welcome to the club!

    - - In recent years, he has included in his Gospel Of Inclusion members of the LGBT community.

    - - - That’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender

    - - - - I bet that’ll help his cause.

    - Recently, he has been accepted to the United Church of Christ and is senior pastor in the New Dimensions church in Tulsa.

    - Why now?

    - - Nothing in the news in particular, but considering he’s black AND a minister, I’d say someone tried to connect him to preacher-challenged Barack Obama.

    - On a serious note, his treating of human beings as human even though they don’t conform to a rigid, millennia-old standard is laudable at least and is one of the few trends in organized religion that I agree with.

    - - Which scares me, but hey. Maybe I’ll try to be a bit inclusionist myself.

  • 13.national building museum (BOB) FUNNY (Buildings w/teats, “big balls”)

    - A giant building

    - - With buildings inside

    - - - That you can look at

    - - - - And maybe take pictures

    - - - - - And read some boring description

    - That’s untrue

    - - I think

    - It’s actually a museum dedicated to, and I quote Wikipedia:

    - - “architecture, design, engineering, construction, and urban planning”

    - - It’s housed in the former Pension Bureau building

    - - - Which has a vast interior space

    - - - - Which they actually do raise buildings in from time to time

    - - - - Also, they hold inaugural balls sometimes

    - Why now?

    - - Hillary Clinton held her final campaign rally there

    - - - She finally conceded what everyone else had known for months

    - - - - That she’d been beaten to the Democratic presidential nomination

    - - - - - By Barrack Obama

  • 12.shirley ardell mason

    - Not Sybil Shepherd.

    - And I don’t know of any other Sybils.

    - There was a 4 hr long movie miniseries thing in 1976 called Sybil.

    - About a woman with upwards of 16 personalities.

    - The actor won an Emmy for her performance.

    - Why now?

    - CBS did a remake.

    - Some said great, orthers said flop.

    - It aired tonight.
  • 4.ushers syndrome (SAM)

    - A genetic disease that has more than one symptom.

    - Thus us why it is called a syndrome not diseaase.

    - Both parents must be carriers for a child to get this disease.

    - If both carry, there is a in 4 chance to get it.

    - Wes, that is like 1 in a million.

    - This disease causes deafness or hearing loss along with issues with vision.

    - Night blindness and peferal vision loss.

    - Causes other retinal issues also.

    - Three seperate types.

    - Type 1 is profoundly deaf at birth with of course, balance issues. Obtain little or no hearing from hearing aids. This goes on to having vision issues.

    - Type 2 is moderate hearing loss but no balance issues. Vision issues not usually started until teen years.

    - Type 3 is when there is normal hearing at birth, hearing issues in teen years and vision issues around 20s. By mid adult, the person is usually legally blind with vision spots.

    - Why now?

    - - Big Brown, the winner of the previous two Crowns, totally failed to win this one.

    - - - BECAUSE HE’S A LOSER!

    - - Da’Tara, which is Klingon for longshot (38-1 to the happy bettors), won instead.

    - - - Big Brown was in last place.

    - - - - Can you bet on that? I bet that was a long shot.

    - - - - Every horse walked away alive though, so in a way they’re all winners.

    - Related search term, furlong, was attached to the other terms but not obviously related to the race.

    - - It is an imperial measurement equal to 1/8th of a mile, or 660 feet, or about 200 meters, or 16.8 Saxony Hogsheads.

  • 1.jim mckay (SAM)

    - Tired of waiting for the (FOTS from 2008/03/14) Freedom Ship?

    - Well, wait no longer! Someone beat them to the punch.

    - Residensea (quite clever name, but my brain wants to pronounce it residen-see-uh) has a cruise ship named “The World” that you can buy condo space on.

    - - They go for about 2.5 million for the cheap ones, up past $5M for the good ones.

    - - - And I now have a rough retirement money goal.

    - - I’m guessing on that. Maybe it’s Mozambiquite or Mozambiquer

    - - In the late 90s and early 00s she moved outdoors and won several World Championship contests.

  • 17.wmata (BOB)

    - Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority

    - - Rail and bus transit system for the Washingon, D.C. area

    - Why now?

    - - Not sure

    - - - A gentleman who uses the name Dr. Gridlock and works for the Washington Post had a 1pm online chat on the day in question

    - - - - And the majority of the searches are from the Washington area

    - - - - - And he mentioned the WMATA

    - - - - - - So I’m going with that. Yay! Not TV

    - - - Apparently, on “Code Red” days, when pollution is particularly high, you can ride some of the buses for free

    - - - - That’s fairly cool

    16.lake delton (BOB)

    - Man-made lake in the Wisconsin Dells tourist area

    - - Was formerly 267 acres (just over a square kilometer)

    - - - And held 600,000,000 gallons of water

    - Why now?

    - - It’s not a lake any more

    - - - Flooding caused a highway which formed a dike wall to erode

    - - - - Causing the lake to spill, in its entirety, into the Wisconsin River

    - - - But vow to vote for McCain, if necessary, over Obama

    - Why now?

    - - Hillary’s concession led to the group gaining momentum

    - - - And news coverage

  • 8.terressentials (SAM)

    - Terra is Latin for solid, or earth.

    - Essentials means something that can’t function without or becomes a necessary.

    - So this is stuff we need made from earth.

    - Close enough.

    - It’s organic stuff for personal grooming essentials.

    - Why now?

    - The dude from Dirty Jobs was at Terressentials.

    - It aired tonight.

    - He was cleaning up messes with mud.

    - I think that ammused him.
  • Warren G. Harding
  • 7.warren g harding (WES) INFORMATIVE

    - 29th president of the United States

    - - Served from 1921 to 1923

    - Was also a US Senator from 1915 to 1921.

    - - Conservative Republican, elected on vows of return to normalcy after WWI.

    - - - Won by a landslide, 60/40

    - - - He was very popular while in office.

    - - - - However, historically he is known by scholars as one of the least successful presidents.

    - - - President during the Teapot Dome Scandal, a fairly boring land-deal scheme gone wrong (read: found out about).

    - - - - Harding was apparently unaware of the scandal while it was taking place.

    - - - - - He died of a heart attack the same year (1923) that the trespasses were discovered.

    - - - - - His presidency has gone down in history, however, as one of the most corrupt.

    - Why now?

    - - John McLachlan, the venerable host of the McLachlan Group televison show, pronounced that Barak Obama would not be the nation’s first black president.

    - - - You see, according to McLachlan, “Warren G. Harding was a negro!”

    - - - - You know, I was going to make a joke but I didn’t want to sully this.

    - - - - Harding’s genealogy is questionable, but to quote him, “How do I know…? One of my ancestors may have jumped the fence.”

    - - - - - Incidentally, and just as an aside that isn’t supposed to really be taken with anything nearing a grain of salt…

    - - - - - - WHO THE HELL CARES!?
  • 12..af domain
  • 5..af (BOB)

    - The national top-level domain (TLD) for Afghanistan

    - - Ours is .us

    - - - But it’s seldom used

    - - - - Except when people like to get creative with their URLs

    - - - - - I have to admit, I’m fond of the name del.icio.us

    - - - - - - But I’ve never used the site

    - Why now?

    - - Almost impossible to tell

    - - - Google ignores the dot and AF stands for all kinds of things

    - - - - My guess: there was a .af URL on the TV news

  • 4.loopt (WES)

    - New service.

    - - You can post your location online at all times.

    - - - People apparently want this.

    - - - - Stalkers of the world are rejoicing.

  • 3.hallmarkchannel.com (SAM) (skip #2)

    - It;s a website.

    - For hallmark TV channel.

    - - - No, this time it’s MobileMe

    - - - - It lets you sync all your Apple devices.

    - - - - - Yeah, that’s it.

    - - - - - - BUT OMG IT’S AWESOME!

    - Related term only because it was announced on the same day, they actually have a new iPhone.

    - - The 3G iPhone was announced to be released on July 11th.

    - - - I’m sure we’ll have more to say then.

    - Michael Crowe in this case was accused of stabbing his little sister while she slept in 1998.

    - Two other friends were also accused and in the end Michael and one friend were accused of the murder.

    - The case ended just before going to trial when blood was found on a T-shirt belonging to someone else who happened to be in the area at the time.

    - Why now?

    - Hearing started into the manner in which the kids were interogated that lead to a false confession.

    - The kids stated they were coerced.

    - A prior judge found though the interogation was harsh and storng, it wasn’t considered over the line because it was not used in court against them.

    - However, the police pretty much kept the kids until they said they did it.

    - Michael was 14 at the time.

    - At that age, you will say anything after being held for days.

  • 4.paige birgfeld (SAM)

    - Paige was also Carrie, a high priced esscort.

    - She had to pay for her $6,000 monthly bills somehow.

    - At the age of 21, Paige was earning up to $400k a year stripping.

    - She apparently called he first ex on the way home on the 4 hr drive.

    - And told him she would call him later when she got home.

    - She never called.

    - There was no list or blackbook for the police to go after, just her cell phone.

    - And her car, that was found burnt out about 15 miles from her home.

    - Close to a RV shop that a client of hers works for.

    - Though the police have closed in on this guy, no charges have been filed to date.

    - Why now then?

    - It aired on the TV.

    - On CBS 48 hr Mystery.

  • 1.buckhead library (WES)

    - Library in Atlanta, GA

    - - Unique architecture.

    - - - I think it’s quite ugly.

    - Why now?

    - - A developer has purchased the land and wants to tear it down to put something less eyesore-y there.

    - - People are freaking out.

    - - - They even put up an online petition

    - - - - Because those always work.

    - - - Said developer has offered to rebuild the library a few blocks away.

    - - - But people don’t want that.

  • An Example of Sushi Omakase
  • 11.omakase (BOB)

    - Japanese word for “entrust” or “protect”

    - - When used at a sushi bar, you’re asking the chef to make what he wants

    - - - At the price he wants

    - - - - While it can be a gamble, you’ll usually get the highest quality fish

    - - - - - At less than the a la carte price would be for the same

    - Why now?

    - - Wesley and I had Sushi Omakase at our local Japanese restaurant that very weekend

    - - - But it’s a regular menu item with a set price

    - - - - While that’s true, I doubt it’s the reason for the googles

    - So why now, really?

    - - I couldn’t find it

    - - - Related search terms are TV stations and “blowfish sushi”

    - - - - Possibly the traditional “Your seafood can KILL you” story

    - - - - - More at 11

  • 10.bonny doon fire (SAM)

    - - - And now I find it hard to concentrate

    - She’s an American singer/songwriter

    - - Of the folkish pop variety

    - - - Her songs are pretty, but fairly unmemorable

    - - - - The same goes for her voice, which is of the breathy variety

    - - - - - Although she shows moments of depth

    - Why now?

    - - I’d like to say it’s because she was named Paste magazine’s artist of the week

    - - - But that was like a week earlier

    - - She was on the Tonight Show

    - - - That’s the one with Jay Leno

  • 6.lucedio (BOB)

    - Why now?

    - - On Scariest Places on Earth

    - - - Near FOTS; the same show that had Poveglia on 4/8/2008

    - - - - Unlike Poveglia, Wikipedia doesn’t say anything about its supposed hauntedness

    - - - - - One blog, however, says that the monks tortured people there

    - - - - - - I’m inclined to doubt it, considering the rather mundane history on the source of all truthiness

  • 5.crap cannon (WES)

    - Teh Awesome!

    - - It’s a cannon. That shoots crap.

    - - - I win!

    - Okay, so it doesn’t shoot crap. It’s not even a cannon. But imagine the possibilities.

    - It’s actually a device that emits a low-frequency tone that, for some unexplained reason, causes uncontrollable defecation in humans.

    - Said tone is known as the Brown Note

    - - No, I’m being totally serious.

    - - - Except about the part that it’s true.

    - - - - There is no such note.

    - - - - - I can prove this beyond a doubt by pointing out that people would be making the noise all the time if it actually existed. Hell, I’d put a big speaker in the local shopping mall just for fun.

    - - - - - - I’d even hang out there (after a good healthy BM and in diapers just in case) to see the hilarity that would ensue.

    - Why now?

    - - People were afraid, for some reason, that crowd control methods at the Democratic National Convention in August would include the alliterative cannon.

    - - - They will not.

    - There are two major events called the “US Open”

    - - One is a tennis tournament that takes place in August

    - - The other is a golf tournament that takes place in June

    - - - Guess which one we’re talking about?

    - Anyway, Round 1 was on Thursday

    - - Rounds 2-4 were on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday

    - - - This year, incidentally, at the end of Round 4 Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate were tied.

    - - - - So, on Monday (Today) they (by now) finished their tiebreaker round.

    - - - - - On the 8th hole, Tiger was up by 2, at -1 to Rocco’s +1

    2.lumbar vertebrae (SAM)

    - The 5 lower vertibre of the back.

    - Have a small spine on each so they don’t tend to stick out much.

    - Sit on top of the sacrum.

    - Why now?

    - No news articles for this day.

    - Others about back pain, slouching and relieving back pain while flying.

    - Some new study in fusing the vertibre above and below a damanges disc to help relieve pain.

    - - Their department of transportation closed roads as a result

    - - - I guess people wondered where and when

    - - - - But I didn’t

    - - - - - BOB SKIP #5

  • 15.fabian society (WES)

    - British Socialist movement

    - - AKA commies

    - - They promote social democracy via gradual and reformist means.

    - - - AKA, they’re brainwashing us, not shooting us.

    - Why now?

    - - The peak, a 9:00am eastern time spike with a long tail, implies an announcement of some sort.

    - - - There is NOTHING in the news for the month.

    - - - - Some of them, you just have to let go.

    - The group that murdered the actress Sharon Tate in 1969.

    - One of them may be released from prision shortly because she is dying of cancer.
  • 12.ultimate tea diet (WES)

    - As fad diets go, this one’s more simple than most.

    - - Find a tea you really like.

    - - And drink a lot of it.

    - Note: I really like Earl Grey tea. I’m also fond of English Breakfast.

    - - I drink a lot of them.

    - - - On workdays, I drink 4-6 mugs of tea.

    - - - I am not really noticing the pounds melting away.

    - The idea is that tea has a substance called L-theanine which curbs the appetite.

    - - Aside: I’m as hungry as I’ve ever been at work.

    - Theanine is an amino acid that can cross the blood-brain barrier, and has been shown to reduce mental and physical stress.

    - - I am likely the least stressed-out living human being so I can’t speak to that.

    - It may also increase the body’s immune system.

    - - This one I can speak to. I get sick about once every 2-3 years, for my entire adult life (since I was 16 or so, actually). Since I started drinking tea in earnest this year, I’ve been sick twice.

    - Why now?

    - - ABC’s show Good Morning America had “Dr Tea” on to show you how to use tea in food.

    - - - The recipe I saw had green tea leaves on a hamburger.

    - - - - That actually sounds interesting, but color me skeptical.

    - - - - - At 210 calories per burger, I suspect it’s the other ingredients and not the tea that’s helping you lose weight.
