- Ventura is a little beach town just south of Santa Barbara in California.
- Or an hour north of LA if you don’t know where Santa Barbara is.

- A tsunami, as discussed last week, is a large wave.
- By large I guess it depends on what normal is.

- Ie the Ferry between the North and South Island stops at a 4 meter swell.
- That’s 12 feet.
- Ie that is in normal range for NZ.
- For Ventura they were concerned about waves of 2-3 feet rolling in.
- To the point they issued a tsunami warning, cleared the beaches, wouldn’t let anyone sit on the rocks and cleared some of the town.
- For a 2-3 foot wave.
- You can’t even surf on that.
- Why did they do this?
- That earthquake in Chille that rocked the county for 8.8 on the scale.
- Generated large waves.
- Ok. It generated waves.
- Some hit harder than others.
- Hiwaii got 3-4 foot waves, NZ got 2 feet waves, Aussie didn’t really get anything, French Polynesia got 5-6 foot waves.

- It was a good test of the bouy system tracking elevations through the ocean.
- The pacific had some of these, but after the giant tsunani on Christmas thru the indian ocean a few years back, they have been dropping these things as fast as they can.
- The waves were thought to have been bigger and faster, however the giant pacific trentches seemed to have taken some of the force and slowed the waves.
- They were projected to get to NZ with 2 meters within 6 hours. Took 14 hrs and were 2 feet.

- - - While messages from Sony indicated that they were working on a fix, the bug simply worked itself out after a day
- - - - Users were understandably grumpy that they couldn’t play on their expensive magical video boxes
- - - - - While I’d like to say that’s another blow to DRM, which really only ever adversely affects paying customers, the truth is it’ll be ignored and forgotten

- There are no “Hockey Overtime Rules”
- - Mostly because they seem to change the rules every few years.
- - It doesn’t help that there are 37 hockey leagues in North America, each with their own rules.

- Most recently, in the NHL (Which seems to be the favorite league), overtime is a single 5-mintue period.
- - If you score during that time, your team wins.
- - If neither team scores, you go into a shootout situation.
- - - To start the shootout, three shots are taken at the goal by each team.

- - - If neither team has the most goals, they start alternating taking shots.
- - - When a team makes a goal, the other team must answer with a goal as well, or they lose.

- Morgan freeman , THe great actor.

- Had an auto accident in August 2008.

- Where his car flipped multipul time and was rescued using jaws of life.
- Had surgery the day after the accident to repair his broken shoulder, elbow and forearm along with the nerve damage.
- Was reported at the time of the accident that he would make a full recovery.

- Why now?
- He has not made a full recovery.
- He has no feeling or ability to move his left hand.
- Now wears a glove to help with the swelling of not moving the hand at all.
- Drs still state he will regain feeling in the hand.
- WEll, it does take about 7 years for the nerve cells to regenerate.
- I wonder how long the statute on sueing for surgery that didn’t work is.
- I bet less than 7 years!
- Well, everyone wanted to know what was up when they saw him with a glove on his left hand.
- Which he also reported on the state of his hand while on the red carpet for ” The Eastwood Factor.”

- A documentary about Clint Eastwood that opened today.

- - For the 2nd time in less than a year, he’s been accused of sexual assault.

- - - - A young lady from Nevada accused him of being one of nine people who “assaulted” her in a hotel room.

- - - This time, he is being accused of sexually assaulting a woman near the Georgia College campus.

When I last left off, I had delivered a one-two punch to the Nazis that had seriously limited their ability to pillage and burn. It was time for the masterstroke that would give us victory in the Culture War; an assault on the Nazi propaganda network in Paris. I’d been vandalizing propaganda speakers throughout the city as part of my sabotage activities, but now I would have a chance to do some real damage.

The Nazis had set up a broadcast tower and transmitter in the innermost courtyard of the Louvre. It was heavily guarded, but I swore that I would bring the whole thing down. The speeches from Berlin and the lies about the Resistance were bad enough, but those godless goose-steppers were committing a crime I could never forgive them for.

They were broadcasting polka music.

I slipped onto the grounds of the Louvre just as night was falling. There were tanks patrolling, guard towers, spotlights. I thought about stealing a guard’s uniform, trying the subtle approach. Then I saw what the Nazis had left unattended, and came up with a new plan. I was going to borrow one of their tanks.

Driving a tank is a bit more difficult than driving a race car, but I managed to join the tank patrol routes without attracting suspicion. By the time the Nazis realized I had left the normal route, I was opening fire on their emplacements. Deafening explosions sent soldiers cartwheeling through the air as I crashed into the courtyard, a final tank shell collapsing the tower into a twisted heap of scrap.

As I threw the tank in reverse and tried to make my escape, a Panzershrek rocket slammed into the side of my tank and the damn thing caught fire. I bailed out and ran for the bushes as the tank exploded behind me, then threw myself over a wall and back onto the street. I barely had time to catch my breath when a Gestapo cruiser pulled up in front of me. Those cars were death on wheels, quite literally. A racing engine, an armored body and twin machine guns on the hood to complete the package. As its driver was getting out, I was already getting in, hitting the gas, and taking off.

The Nazis were turning the city upside-down looking for me. Simply running and hiding wasn’t an option. The time had come to take a stand against the invaders. I radioed in to Resistance HQ and told them my plan. We would meet the enemy head-on at the Arc de Triomphe. The Culture War had started there. Now, we were going to finish it.

As the cruiser roared onto the Champs Elysee, I saw that the Resistance was already fighting. They had set up under the Arc itself, and were managing to hold their own against the foe. I pulled up, got out, manned the heavy machine gun, and started mowing down anyone wearing a swastika that I could see. The Nazi line began to weaken, then fall back. I whipped out the ol’ Siegfaust, sent a grenade into the middle of their reinforcements, and that broke them. They scattered like rats, and the day was ours.

For me, the Culture War was over. The Resistance had scored a victory against the occupying forces. And they even let me keep the cruiser.

Following General Loder’s brief encounter with a rocket-propelled grenade, Nazi attendance at book-burnings plummeted. Now it was time to sabotage their art smuggling network, and the best way to kill that snake was to cut off its head.

General Beckmann was the ringleader of the gang that was spiriting valuable artworks out of the city. An expert on all things artistic, Beckmann was the guy who marked the most valuable pieces for a one-way trip to Berlin. Without him, the Nazis wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a real Renoir and a fake Monet.

But what happened to Loder had apparently made everyone paranoid. Beckmann was making his rounds in a bulletproof limo, surrounded by a convoy of armored cars. He was scheduled to visit the Louvre that night. My task was to make sure he never made it there.

Lady Bonnaire had arranged for a construction elevator at the Museum of Photography to be left unattended, giving me access to the roof. I’d have a fine vantage point of the convoy from there. I dusted off the Siegfaust and drove to the museum.

Getting to the roof was a piece of piss. There was one guard patrolling up there, but he wasn’t patrolling for long. I was setting up on a scaffold overlooking the street when a nearby radio squawked to life and a string of German issued from it. Not speaking any German, I simply muttered “Ja” into the mike and hoped the convoy wouldn’t be spooked. It seemed to work, and I could hear the convoy approaching. Then I saw something lying on a nearby crate and knew that Christmas had come early this year.

A loaded Panzershrek.

A Panzershrek rocket will blow a hole in a heavy tank large enough to pass a cow through. I couldn’t wait to see what it would do to that limo. I dropped the Seigfaust unceremoniously onto the floor and readied my new toy as the limo came into view.

Lady Bonnaire had told me she wanted Beckmann to have a closed casket funeral. After the rocket hit his limo, I’m pretty sure you could have buried him in a sausage casing. As the convoy erupted in confusion, I headed back along the roof, hoping to get to my car without being seen.

That’s when I caught my second break of the evening. An alarm box sat calmly on the roof, and with a pull of the lever the alarm klaxons stopped and the Nazis returned to their base, believing me to be either captured or killed. An elevator ride and a leisurely stroll back to my car soon had me heading home again, wondering why all my jobs couldn’t go that smoothly.

Though I suppose if they did, my life wouldn’t be half as exciting.

After obtaining some forged travel papers, I made my way to the
western section of Paris to meet the formidable Lady Margot Bonnaire.
The Lady Bonnaire was in her mid-fifties, with a face like a hatchet
and a tongue twice as sharp. Before she’d agree to work with me, I had
to earn her trust by breaking one of her best spies out of a Gestapo
cell. The job didn’t exactly go like clockwork, but I managed to get
the prisoner out amongst the gunfire and explosions.

With that out of the way, Madame Bonnaire let me know where her
priorities lay. She had been an art restorer in the Louvre before all
the shooting started, and was no fan of the Nazi’s cultural policies.
Those policies basically boiled down to “Burn what we don’t like,
steal what we do like, and drown the rest out with propaganda
broadcasts.” My job was to cripple the enemy’s ability to erode the
cultural landscape of Paris. I figured, why not? I’m a classy guy.

My first target practically landed in my lap. A general named Loder
was overseeing a massive book-burning at the Arc de Triomphe. I would
voice the people’s displeasure at this act by putting a bullet in his
head. After picking up a scoped rifle from the Black Market, I drove
to the site of the burning.

The Arc de Triomphe was an unpleasant shade of orange, lit by great
heaps of burning books. I could hear Loder ranting over a loudspeaker
about “Parisian trash” and “cowardly degenerate filth” as his troops
milled about the bonfires. I set the rifle on the hood of the car and
scanned under the Arc for Loder. I was in for a shock.

Loder had shown up for the book-burning in a fucking tank.

There’s something vaguely ironic about calling your enemies degenerate
cowards while you’re hiding inside an armored vehicle, but I didn’t
have time to appreciate irony. I had to go buy a grenade launcher.

It wasn’t cheap, but I managed to get my hands on a Siegfaust Mark II
launcher and set up a shot behind Loder’s tank. I wasn’t expecting it
to be quite so noisy. The last time something in my arms went off that
loudly, it was an Italian girl I met in Monaco. A second shot turned
Loder’s tank into a twisted metal coffin, and then it was time to make
a hasty exit.

The Culture War had begun.

When I last left off, I was in the Nazi Nunnery, trapped in the Corridor of Death. I had no option but to take cover behind the very radar consoles I was supposed to sabotage. The heavy guns did a real number on the machinery, which only left two consoles to deal with. Unfortunately, they were placed behind the machine gun nests that had me pinned down.

I lunged into the Corridor, tossed one grenade in one direction, another in the other and dove back behind cover. The sounds of explosions and sparking electricity told me that the L’Ossuaire radar station was finally out of business. It wasn’t until I left cover again that I learned the grenades had destroyed the radar consoles but not the machine gun nests guarding them.

And they say the Irish are lucky.

I put my head down and ran out of the nunnery, bullets whizzing past my ears. The whole abbey was swarming with Nazis, but my faithful Thompson barked at them and drove them back. I jumped into the Bugatti, whipped into a bootleg turn and got the hell out of there.

At least, that was the plan. Suddenly, a German armored personnel carrier came flying out of the underbrush and t-boned my Bugatti! Two more APCs crashed into me, and I suddenly found myself pinned between a stone wall and 6 tons of Nazi armored vehicle.

Bob, you might want to stop reading now. I had no choice but to slap a remote-detonation charge on the dashboard of the Bugatti, hurl myself over the stone wall, and push the plunger. The resulting fireball claimed the Bugatti and all three of the APCs. The loss of three armored vehicles on top of their radar station enraged the Nazis to a level I had not yet seen. In another time and place, it might have been known as a “4-star wanted rating”. And I was now without a vehicle.

I ran through the briars and I ran through the brambles. I ran through the bushes where the rabbits couldn’t go. I wound my way through silent farming villages and shimmering fields of grain. Finally, I crossed a river and found myself on the outskirts of Paris as the sirens ceased their cry. I had slipped through the net.

I staggered to the nearest Resistance safehouse, hoping to find a safe place to collapse. Alas, things had been happening while I was away. The head of my Resistance cell had been contacted by a cell in another part of the city, and wanted to form an alliance. I had grown used to being an Emissary of Death. Now, I was to be an Emissary of Peace…
